Walkway and Sidewalk Installation in Lehighton, PA

Walkways and Sidewalks · Lehighton, PA

A solid base under every walkway and sidewalk

A raised edge on the front walkway catches a toe. A low spot by the door holds water, and in winter that water turns to ice. NS Paving and Landscaping handles walkway installation and sidewalk installation for homes and businesses. We are a paving and landscaping contractor serving Lehighton and towns across six counties.

A good walkway starts below the surface. We dig out the soft ground, then set and compact a stone base in its place. The finished surface gets a slight pitch, so rain runs off the walkway and away from the house. When the driveway is worn out too, ask about asphalt driveway paving at the same estimate.

What We Handle

  • Walkway installation from the driveway to the front door
  • Sidewalk installation along the street side of a property
  • Walkways out to a back patio or a side door
  • A new sidewalk where an old one has cracked or heaved
  • Soft ground dug out and replaced with compacted stone
  • A slight pitch on each walkway so rain runs off
  • Street sidewalks built to the line and grade your town requires
  • Free estimates, with every quote in writing

Walkway installation from the driveway to the door

A front walkway carries every guest and every delivery to your door. It should feel level underfoot and drain after a storm. The right route often follows the line people already walk across the lawn.

A walkway sits near the surface, well above the frost line. Lehighton's residential plan guide calls for footings at least 42 inches deep. A walkway gets a drained stone base instead, and the written quote names its depth and the surface on top.

Where the walkway meets the driveway or the front step, we set the two surfaces flush. If the walkway runs to the back of the house, it can end at a new patio. We can quote patio installation along with it.

Why do sidewalks crack and heave?

Most sidewalk trouble starts in the ground underneath. Water in the soil swells as it freezes and lifts the slab. When it thaws, the ground settles unevenly, and the slab cracks or tips. NOAA's averages for Lehighton show about 132 days a year with a low of 32 degrees or colder.

Tree roots lift slabs from below as they grow. A base that was never compacted lets a section sink over time. Where a sidewalk crosses a driveway, cars add their weight too.

When a failed sidewalk comes out, the soft or wet soil under it comes out too. Fresh compacted stone takes its place. Nearby Palmerton's borough standards call for 4 inches of crushed stone under a town sidewalk. They also call for a 4-inch slab, and 8 inches where the sidewalk crosses a driveway.

Sidewalk installation and Lehighton's borough code

In Lehighton, the borough code makes each property owner responsible for the sidewalk in front of the property. The property owner must keep it in good repair at their own cost. Any part that becomes unsafe to walk on has to be repaired or rebuilt.

The borough can also require a new sidewalk in front of a property, on 30 days' written notice. If the work is not done, the borough can have it done and charge the cost to the property.

A new Lehighton sidewalk follows the line and grade set by the Borough Engineer. It also follows the engineer's specifications, which the Borough Council approves. Under the code, the property owner asks the engineer for the line and grade, and we build to them. The borough's codes and zoning office handles curb and sidewalk inspections.

FAQ

Walkways and Sidewalks Questions, Answered

Common questions about walkways and sidewalks around Lehighton and Carbon, Monroe and the surrounding counties. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

What does a new walkway or sidewalk cost?
The price depends on the length and width of the job and the surface you choose. An old slab that has to come out adds work, and so does soft ground that needs more base. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing. Call or text (484) 545-5072 to set it up.
Do I need a permit for a new walkway or sidewalk?
At a home, Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code requires no permit for a sidewalk 30 inches or less above the ground. That holds when the sidewalk is not over a basement and the work breaks no local law. At a business, the exemption does not cover a sidewalk that is part of an accessible route. Your town's code office has the final word, and we point you there before the work is scheduled.
Does a walkway job need an 811 call first?
Yes. Pennsylvania law requires a call to 811 three to ten business days before machine digging starts. Each utility then marks about where its buried lines run, with paint or flags. Utilities may not mark lines you own, such as wiring for outdoor lights, so tell us where those run.
How much base does a walkway need compared to a driveway?
One hardscape industry guide, written for paver walkways, calls for at least 4 inches of compacted base on well-drained soil. For a home driveway, the same guide calls for at least 6 inches. In colder climates, it calls for a thicker base where the soil stays wet or weak. We check the ground at the estimate, and the written quote spells out the base.
Will a new walkway stop water at my front door?
It can help. We pitch the new walkway so rain runs off it and away from the house. If the whole yard slopes toward the house, a walkway alone may not fix it. The estimate is the time to look at that.
Do you install walkways and sidewalks outside Lehighton?
Yes. Lehighton sits at the center of our service area, which reaches about 40 miles across six counties. Towns set their own sidewalk rules, and Bethlehem and Hazleton both require a building permit for one. The full list of towns we serve shows where we work.
