New driveways and replacements, built from the base up

Asphalt driveway paving covers new driveways for homes and full replacement of worn-out ones. NS Paving and Landscaping is an asphalt paving contractor serving Lehighton and six Pennsylvania counties. We pave new residential driveways and replace old ones from the base up.

Most driveway trouble starts under the surface. Water gets into a weak base, then freezes and pushes the asphalt up. Cracks and soft spots follow. Call or text (484) 545-5072 for a free estimate, and we will put the quote in writing.

What We Handle

  • New asphalt driveways for homes, on bare ground or over an old stone drive
  • Full driveway replacement, from tear-out to the final roll
  • Weak spots in the ground dug out and replaced with firm material
  • Crushed stone base spread to grade and compacted before any asphalt goes down
  • Hot asphalt spread and rolled while it is still hot
  • Slope set so rain runs off the drive and away from the house
  • Thickness matched to the heaviest vehicle the drive will carry
  • A free estimate, with the quote in writing before work starts

Residential Driveway Paving Starts Below the Asphalt

The asphalt is only the top layer of a driveway. Under it, a compacted stone base spreads each car's weight over the ground. Weak spots in the ground get dug out and replaced before the base goes down. Fill around a new home tends to settle, so a few months' wait before paving is sometimes wise.

Hot asphalt is spread and rolled while it is still hot. The national asphalt trade association says the mix must be compacted before it cools to 185 degrees. Rolling packs the mix tight, and a tight surface sheds water.

Standing water soaks into the base and weakens it. A state asphalt association's driveway guide calls for a slope of at least a quarter inch per foot. We set the slope so rain runs off the asphalt and away from the house. Pennsylvania's stormwater law also requires anyone who alters land to keep its runoff from harming other property.

When Does an Asphalt Driveway Need Full Replacement?

Many worn driveways can be fixed in place. Asphalt resurfacing puts a new layer of asphalt over the old drive when the base underneath is still sound. A drive with a few holes may need only asphalt patching.

Wide patches of spider-web cracks, called alligator cracking, often mean the base has lost its strength. Potholes that come back every spring can point the same way. Poor drainage and spring thaw can both weaken a base. When the base is the problem, new asphalt on top of it tends to crack again.

Full driveway replacement starts with tearing out the old asphalt. The base is rebuilt where it failed and compacted again, and new asphalt goes on last. Replacement is also the time to widen the drive or fix where the water goes.

Asphalt Driveways and Carbon County Winters

NOAA's 30-year climate averages for Lehighton count about 132 days a year with a low of 32 degrees or colder. January averages a high near 36 and a low near 19, so many winter days cross the freezing line. Water that freezes under a driveway expands and lifts the asphalt above it.

Federal NRCS soil surveys flag frost action as a limit for roads on the soils mapped around Lehighton. Several of those soils also rate low in strength under traffic. That is why the stone base and the drainage matter more here than the top layer.

Asphalt industry guidance warns that thin layers of hot asphalt lose heat fast on a cool surface. The time left for rolling may be under 10 to 20 minutes, so driveway paving belongs in dry, mild weather. In a typical year, NOAA's averages put frost around Lehighton from late October to late April.

How much does asphalt driveway paving cost?
Size comes first, then the ground under the driveway. Tear-out and base repairs add to the price, and so do extra thickness and a steep slope. We look at the driveway and put a free estimate in writing. Our guide to asphalt driveway costs in Pennsylvania covers published market ranges.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
A state asphalt association's driveway guide says 6 to 8 inches of crushed stone base is usually adequate. For best results, it lists a 2-inch bottom course of asphalt under a 1.5-inch surface course. Heavier vehicles and soft ground call for more. Ask that every written quote list the base depth and the asphalt thickness.
Can a gravel driveway be paved with asphalt?
Yes. A gravel drive gets the same groundwork as any new driveway before the asphalt goes down. Soft spots are dug out, and the stone base is built up to full depth and compacted. If you would rather keep a stone drive, gravel driveway regrading restores the surface.
Do I need a permit to pave a driveway in Lehighton?
In Lehighton, a new access onto a borough road needs the borough's driveway permit. One onto a state highway needs PennDOT's highway occupancy permit, applied for in the owner's name. Rules differ by town, and some list paving as building-permit work. We point you to the right office before work starts.
Does someone need to call 811 before a driveway is dug out?
Pennsylvania's one-call law covers digging with powered equipment, so a driveway dig-out needs a call to 811. The call goes in three to ten business days before work starts. Utility companies may not mark lines you own, like yard lighting or a buried pet fence. Tell us where yours run before we start.
How soon can I drive on a new asphalt driveway?
Industry guidance advises waiting a few days before driving on new asphalt. Keep heavy trucks off a fresh driveway, like a moving truck at a new home. Gasoline and motor oil can break down asphalt, so clean up spills on the drive.
