A pothole in the driveway or a crumbling spot in a parking lot calls for asphalt patching and repair. NS Paving and Landscaping patches existing holes with hot asphalt for homeowners and businesses. Patching sits alongside the paving we do as an asphalt paving contractor serving Lehighton and the surrounding counties.
Patching works when the asphalt around each hole is still solid. When holes and cracks run across most of the surface, asphalt resurfacing or new paving may fit better. We look at the damage and tell you which fix makes sense. Every job starts with a free estimate and a written quote.
Tell us about the job and where it is. We will look it over and put the quote in writing.
A pothole starts in the ground under the pavement. PennDOT's pothole sheet shows how. Rain or melted snow seeps into the soil below the asphalt. When that water freezes, the ground expands and lifts the pavement.
After the thaw, the ground settles back, but the pavement often stays raised over a gap. Traffic then cracks the weak surface, and it falls into that hollow space. PennDOT calls Pennsylvania's freeze and thaw cycle aggressive and rapid. It also says winters with heavy precipitation and frequent temperature swings typically bring more potholes.
Lehighton's winter numbers show that swing. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put the average winter high near 38 degrees and the average low near 21. Spring still brings about 32 nights at or below freezing, from March through May. The same normals show about 52 inches of rain and melted snow a year.
PennDOT lays out the steps its crews use for a more lasting pothole repair. The pothole is cut into a square and cleaned out. A tack coat goes on to bond the new asphalt to the old. Then asphalt mix heated to 250 to 265 degrees goes in and is compacted with a roller or other equipment.
The Federal Highway Administration's patching checklist adds more detail. The patch outline reaches at least a foot beyond the damage on every side. The hole goes down to firm support, and poor ground under it comes out too. Granular fill replaces that ground, compacted in layers, commonly 6 inches at a time.
The hot asphalt goes in and is compacted in layers of 3 inches or less. The finished patch sits flush or up to 0.2 inch high, since traffic packs it down a little more. Once the patch cools, the checklist calls for sealing its edges to keep water out. At the estimate, we look at how far the damage runs and how deep it goes.
Some damage is a few holes in an otherwise solid surface. That is patch work, on a home driveway or a big parking lot. Other damage spreads across the paths where tires run.
The federal pavement distress manual calls it fatigue cracking. It starts as connected cracks and later breaks into a chicken wire or alligator pattern. The pieces are usually under a foot on the longest side. When that pattern covers most of a driveway, a patch only fixes part of the problem.
Patching also comes before sealcoating, since sealer is a thin coat over the surface. Potholes in a stone driveway are a different job. Those call for gravel driveway regrading instead of an asphalt patch.
