How Much Does an Asphalt Driveway Cost in Pennsylvania?
Most homeowners pay $3,154 to $7,556 for a new asphalt driveway, one national cost guide says. That guide, updated in October 2026, puts the national average at $5,350. These are market numbers, not our price list.
| Type of job | Market range per square foot (October 2026 national guide) |
|---|---|
| New asphalt driveway | $7 to $13 |
| Replacement, with tear-out | $8 to $15 |
| Overlay on a sound driveway | $3 to $7 |
Guides split on the per-foot price. Another one updated in October 2026 averages about $5 per square foot. Its typical project still lands at $3,086 to $7,912.
Four things decide where a Pennsylvania driveway lands in those ranges. They are the size, the base prep, the asphalt thickness and the drainage. Freeze and thaw winters make the base and the drainage count even more here. A solid quote for asphalt driveway paving spells out all four.
What does a new asphalt driveway cost by size?
Size sets the starting point. Most home driveways run 200 to 800 square feet, the first 2026 guide says, for one car or two. A 2025 national guide prices them by size below, with materials and installation included.
| Driveway size | Example layout | Market range installed (2025 national guide) |
|---|---|---|
| 200 square feet | 10 by 20 feet | $1,000 to $2,400 |
| 400 square feet | 20 by 20 feet | $2,000 to $4,800 |
| 600 square feet | 20 by 30 feet | $3,000 to $7,200 |
| 800 square feet | 20 by 40 feet | $4,000 to $9,600 |
| 1,000 square feet | 20 by 50 feet | $5,000 to $12,000 |
The first 2026 guide runs higher, at $1,400 to $2,600 for 200 square feet and $5,600 to $10,400 for 800. Small jobs can cost more per square foot. The 2025 guide notes that some contractors set a minimum charge of $2,000 or more. A long run from the road or a circle drive adds square feet fast.
How much does base prep add to the price?
The base is the layer of compacted crushed stone under the asphalt. An asphalt trade association’s driveway brief puts it at 6 to 8 inches for a home driveway. The 2026 guide prices that stone layer at $0.50 to $1 more per square foot.
Replacing an old driveway means tearing it out first. The 2026 guide puts removal at $1 to $2 per square foot. Where a site needs grading and leveling, it adds $5 to $10 per square foot.
Pennsylvania winters are why the base matters so much. PennDOT explains that water seeps into the soil under pavement, then freezes and expands. That pushes the pavement up, and traffic later breaks the weak spots into potholes.
NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for Lehighton count about 132 days a year with a freezing low. Only about 24 of those days stay at or below freezing all day. So most freezing days thaw again by afternoon.
Local soils add to the risk. NRCS road ratings list frost action as a limit on every soil around Lehighton. Several also rate very limited for low strength, so they need a firm stone base.
Machine digging for a base counts as excavation under Pennsylvania’s one-call law. The excavator must call 811 three to ten business days before work starts. Utility locators may not mark lines you own, like yard lighting or an underground pet fence.
How thick should a driveway be in Pennsylvania?
The same trade brief calls for two layers of asphalt on a home driveway. That is a 2-inch bottom course under a 1.5-inch surface course. For heavier vehicles, the 2025 guide calls for 3 to 4 inches over an 8 to 10 inch base. Thicker asphalt costs more up front, and that guide says it lasts longer.
Thickness drives the material bill. The 2026 guide says a ton of asphalt covers roughly 80 square feet at 2 inches thick. Double the thickness and a ton covers about half that area.
The state sets a floor where a driveway meets a state highway. Under the Pennsylvania Code, driveway pavement inside the highway right-of-way must be at least four inches thick. So the stretch nearest the road may need more asphalt than the rest.
How does drainage change the cost?
Good drainage keeps water out of the base, where freeze damage starts. The national asphalt trade association recommends a side-to-side tilt of 1.5 to 3 percent, so water runs off. Curves and hills can raise the price 15 to 30 percent, the 2025 guide says. It lists added drainage work at $500 to $2,000 per feature.
State highways have their own rules. Building or changing a driveway inside a state highway right-of-way takes a PennDOT highway occupancy permit. For a home driveway, the state fee schedule lists $15 to issue it, plus a $10 inspection fee.
At a state road, a ditch or swale calls for a pipe under the driveway at least 15 inches across. That pipe is a culvert, and another national guide prices driveway culverts at $1,000 to $9,000.
Under Pennsylvania’s Storm Water Management Act, anyone who changes land must keep its runoff from harming others. Bethlehem and Easton also charge a stormwater fee on properties with 500 square feet or more of hard surface. Lehighton Borough’s stormwater tips suggest driveways built from porous asphalt. The 2025 guide prices porous asphalt at $7 to $15 per square foot installed.
When is resurfacing or patching enough?
An old driveway with a solid base may only need a new top layer. The 2026 guide puts an overlay at $3 to $7 per square foot, since it skips the tear-out. It also warns that an overlay only works on a driveway that is still sound. Widespread holes or spiderweb cracks point to a full replacement.
Our asphalt resurfacing page covers how an overlay goes down. A few holes in a solid driveway call for asphalt patching and repair instead. The 2025 guide lists small crack and pothole fixes at $100 to $400. Major repairs run $600 to $3,000 in the same guide.
What else moves a driveway quote in Pennsylvania?
Timing matters. PennDOT notes that the state’s asphalt plants reopen in spring after the winter. The trade brief also says to pave only in good weather and avoid cold, rainy days. So winter is a good time to gather quotes for spring work.
Trees in the path add cost as well. One national guide lists $400 to $1,200 per tree to remove, plus $205 per stump to grind.
Long country driveways can bring in state erosion rules. Once a project disturbs 5,000 square feet of ground or more, Pennsylvania requires a written erosion and sediment control plan. Smaller jobs still need erosion controls under the same rule.
Plan for upkeep as well. National cost guides put the average driveway sealcoating job at about $305 to $499. For the timing, read when to sealcoat a new driveway.
